Please keep the following in mind as you read the below: every snide comment made about D&D has at its premise the belief that adults engaging in that much pretend and imagination is undignified. Okay? You don't make fun of D&D because you think it's an accurate depiction of reality. If your only exposure to the game is making fun of those who play, you already damn well know that the point of it isn't realism.
The developers noted that while they want to feature characters “who represent an array of ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, and beliefs,” the game still contains problematic depictions of fantasy races.
Just let that sink in for a minute. This was written without sarcasm.
We present orcs and drow in a new light in two of our most recent books, Eberron: Rising from the Last War and Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount. In those books, orcs and drow are just as morally and culturally complex as other peoples. We will continue that approach in future books, portraying all the peoples of D&D in relatable ways and making it clear that they are as free as humans to decide who they are and what they do.
I mean... okay. Complex characters make for better storytelling but Salvatore beat you by about 30 years. He made the Drow cool. Are we going to make Drizzt a white elf now, because associating dark skin with evil alignment isn't woke? But if we did make him white; wouldn't that imply that only white races can be a force for good? Conundrum!
Curse of Strahd was one of two adventures, the other being Tomb of Annihilation, in which the company changed “racially insensitive” text in recent reprintings.
Using the term "racial" in a liberal context when talking about D&D is hilarious to me, because of just how far it differs from in-game usage. Do they mean "blackface" racially insensitive or "never trust a dragon" insensitive? And man oh freaking man I hope it's the latter because I'd love to meet an SJW dragon advocate. What in the actual fuck are we even talking about anymore.

Seriously? They tried this 20 years ago. There were series of books regarding the drow that were written about a number of drow trying to break away from their legacy as evil and be presented as much more nuanced characters. Salvatore edited and oversaw the project, but other authors actually did the writing.
Then there was the whole Kingdom of Many Arrows plot where a new kingdom of Orcs tried to be established as a civilized nation...
In the end they remembered that people play the game to escape all the complications of real life and just want to smack some monsters ass around.
