Unlike the proposal outlined in the article wants to leave all admission slots to chance, I think leaving only a small fraction of admission slots to chance is a good idea. It's like a careful person occasionally trying something new outside his comfort zone, or a managed investment fund setting aside a small percentage of its asset for speculation. You don't risk the whole shebang, but still allow for surprise outsized returns from time to time, the sort that your normal process would not produce.

Meet a minimum standard and go pure lottery. You'd have a more eclectic and vibrant student body.
