        I wonder if this was really nationalistic related? They were arrested for kidnapping, murder, etc. Maybe it was revenge?

          As I understand it, they were regional gangsters, mafiosi. The politician had the reputation of being something of a Robin Hood figure among locals; not unlike Al Capone who also ran soup kitchens for the poor in addition to his primary business of bootlegging and other criminal activities.
