DeSantis Doubles Down

What’s truly remarkable is that there will be people cheering this on who call themselves “conservatives”.
@jon-nyc yes.
I haven't followed this too closely, but I have a couple of
questionspoints:Has Disney received breaks that other corporations have not? If so, I get it.
The newly elected mayor of Chicago proposes a "visitor tax." Not sure of the specifics, but he plans to impose a tax on people who commute into the city for work.

The 'conservative' umbrella would include culture warriors on the conservative side of the culture issues. It's still an appropriate label, even if the warfare includes some non-conservative policy.

The reason Florida has no income tax is because it bleeds tourists.
That isn’t really my cup of tea, but it has a very different tenor than sitting around with your staff trying to figure out ways to use the apparatus of the state to punish your political enemies.
This is the kind of thing I could envision Elizabeth Warren doing to Exxon and maybe Elon Musk.

True, I guess. Irving Kristol used to say there are two major currents in American conservatism, anti-state and anti-left.
The anti-state folks were supreme under Reagan, took a back seat during GWB and the GWoT, and were more or less purged during the Trump era.

DeSantis’ time to influence policies in Florida is limited. Disney was there long before DeSantis came into the picture, and Disney will be there long after DeSantis leave.
DeSantis is doing this for a certain segment of national audience in the service of his own Presidential ambition, not for the benefit of Floridians. Most Floridians can see that. This will not end well for DeSantis.

It’s stupid on DeSantis’ part.
-
Disney doesn’t pay the tolls, the consumers will pay the tolls.
-
Ultimately Disney won’t pay the taxes, consumers will pay the taxes.
-
If you do this will it also affect Universal, Busch Gardens, LegoLand, Sea World, and the myriad other resorts and parks in the Orlando area?
I get removing the special exemption, but this is crossing the line, IMO.
Rather than the stick, it’s time for the carrot.

I’m already imagining the “I did that” stickers of DeSantis on the toll booths seen by millions of Americans from all over the country as they stop and get out their wallets.

Yep. I’m just hoping that this is DeSantis just trying to leverage position and not a serious position of his.

I was thinking the same thing. LOL
