Kind of a sad story about how a homeless camp effects a nearby sandwich shop.

    https://www.sfexaminer.com/news/national/a-sandwich-shop-a-tent-city-and-an-american-crisis/article_d7682456-5e05-5123-8bf2-65adf235fbd4.html

As with most large scale problems, there are no easy answers.

The answers are easy, the execution is hard

90% of the street people have mental health issues and most of those have recreational drug problems. The other 10% are vagrants and need to be moved on.

Some will benefit from temporary institutionalization, some will benefit from treatment and halfway houses and some need to be in an institution for the rest of their lives.

          This takes money and commitment.

              OK...let's expand the discussion.

Do other nations have a similar problem issue? Are there homeless in Indonesia, Moscow, Berlin, or Cape Town?

If not, why not? Underreporting or a smaller problem?

If so, how is it being dealt with?

Is the US unique with this problem?

Let's take two countries at random - the US and UK.

According to Wiki the UK has a total homeless population of 54.4 per 10K of population, compared to the US, which has 17.5. However, the UK has an 'unsheltered' homeless pop. of 0.9 per 10K, compared to 7.0 in the US.

So, I'm guessing it's not particularly straightforward.

                I was only joking

@Doctor-Phibes what's the difference between "homeless" and "unsheltered?"

In Asia (especially north Asia), there was a historical trend that family took care of people, so that there was not that much homelessness. But with the population pyramid going upside down, it is not so strong anymore so you see a lot more homeless than I ever saw before in places like Taiwan and Japan.

Can't tell you how much I appreciate your "world perspective" on issues. It really helps, or at least tries, to reset my parochial worldview.

I think unsheltered essentially means living on the street, whereas 'homeless' includes people living in shelters, with friends, etc.

To answer your original question, there are plenty of homeless in the UK. I remember the number increased dramatically in the 1980's, and got progressively worse. From just random visits to certain cities in the US, I get the feeling it's worse here.
