I wonder if women tend to be more brand and status conscious about their consumer choices, and are willing to pay more for a brand based entirely on the status of that brand, rather than the product qualities.

Amen. I use Tresseme, which is about $5 a quart. She uses whatever the salon sells her at $10 per teaspoon.
