Actually, I think Mayfield is a decent QB. Cleveland dropped the ball big time. The Watson fiasco will bury them for another decade.

Agreed. he had aa weak supporting cast and some injuries, but I think he's a winner. Not a top 5 maybe, but a winner. Cleveland is notoriously bad at attracting talent and keeping it. Their coaching also sucks.

In the NFL QB rankings, I'd put him at 15, give or take a couple of spots.

                  Thanks.

I'm thinking about Blaine Gabbert, Brady's runner-up QB. It's one thing to back up a $15mil/year player; but then to go from there to backing up a $4mil/year -- when you're already on the payroll! must be a bitter pill.

I don't think he was ever seriously considered to replace Brady. But still.

                        Found this on Profootballtalk:

"Last year, Mayfield made a major bet on himself, trading in a guaranteed $19.9 million base salary with the Browns for a much lower guaranteed payment. He’s making a bet for a second straight year, wagering on spending the 2023 season proving himself to be a starter in the NFL.

"Either way, it’s a great deal for the Buccaneers. They get Mayfield for relative peanuts, as they transition away from Tom Brady. And if Mayfield plays well, he’ll get a lot more than $4 million in 2024."

If I'm understanding this, I got to admire that betting-on-himself approach.

Yes, I can see that. The job brings an insane amount of responsibility. Duty, accountability, representation . . . you must be an effective leader, must be seen as reliable. Last but so much not least, you must be fit and strong enough to do the job with skill and power that is unique in the team. You must be able to get sacked three times in the same game by a freightload of the enemy, and climb to your feet and throw it again and keep throwing it until it's done.

You have to walk totally tall.

How can you begin to do all that and be all that if you don't believe in yourself?

Here's what Tristan Wirfs, one of Brady's protectors (offensive tackle) said about Brady. When asked how he would describe Brady to his kids in the future, he said, “Just gonna tell ‘em he was an old dog. I’ve loved every second of it. He’s a very special person, really special player…Yeah, he surprises me. His old ass threw what, like a 60-yard bomb? He’s awesome. I love him to death.”
