It does sound very selfish. I think there's a point at which a lot of parents have a mini-rebellion after devoting themselves wholeheartedly to bringing up their young kids, and start saying 'I need to do something that's all about me', and I suspect it happens after about 8 years. Most of us take up a hobby - it kind of looks a bit like she decided to come out of the closet.
