Speculation is growing about China potentially invading Taiwan

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has taught China some valuable lessons. Here are the main ones /1

China will be careful not to replicate Russia's mistake of invading with insufficient manpower

A successful offensive requires 3:1 manpower advantage

With 150,000 troops and 2.5 million reservists in Taiwan, this is a massive manpower commitment from China /2

China will also press its air power advantage before the US can provide Taiwan with more extensive air defence cover

The low profile of Russia's fixed wing jets in Ukraine, especially in contrast to Syria, prevented air superiority

China will take lessons from US wars /3

China has maritime strength but it needs to get a vast force 177km across the Taiwan Strait

Amphibious landings are high-risk and complicated, as Russia learnt from Odesa

It will be interesting to see how much of its 7.2% defence spending increase will go to the navy /4

China will also realise the limitations of hybrid warfare, such as disinformation, cyberattacks and recruitment of local collaborators

These tactics are expected to be paired with a conventional attack but Russia's experiences in Georgia and Ukraine show their limits /5

The U.S. needs to get their butt in gear. Avondale, same as some other shipyards, sits idle.

I know where they could get some nice equipment - cheap

This was just 3 days ago - in the local paper

Navy Seabee battalion honored in decommissioning ceremony, is deactivated after 80 years of building and fighting

Not just the US, but every NATO member.

The biggest deter from China invading Taiwan is economic. If the world can hold together against Russia and would hopefully respond the same way against China, I think this would stop China from invading.
