Steven Spielberg is the programmer for TCM tonight. The movie he picked was The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, mostly because he felt it was a very differently done film by one of his favorite directors...A director who has had a life-long influence on his work.

An influence starting with advice the director gave Spielberg when he was 16.

Spielberg said it took him ten years to really understand what Ford told him. Composition was Ford's strength as a director and an interesting composition makes the shot. One of the reasons Ford liked to work on visually interesting locations.

But Liberty was different. The story was so strong, Ford shot it almost all in the studio and in black & white. It was one of the few westerns ever nominated for wardrobe (Edith Head). And it was a pessimistic film in many ways.

I can believe it. Ostensibly, he's just talking about the rule of thirds.

          Ostensibly.

          Please love yourself.
