No, actually it's more an affirmation that people who join 'cults' are psychologically normative, if maybe on one end of some distribution or another. Neediness, credulity, etc. But we're wired to receive our truths and accept them, based on what those around us find socially acceptable. We're also wired to receive and accept hatreds or disgusts.

Good questions. I suspect that in some cases cults can and do become religious denominations. Christian Science comes immediately to mind.
