Even that is better than Schiff.

My sense of it is he’s trying to move the house closer to the center again. Getting rid of those two is a good step in that direction.

Schiff makes Baghdad Bob look good. Seldom has a member of Congress lied so much to the American people.

OK, but if he's really interested in centralizing, he also needs to do something about the nuttier Republicans.

The point is that there are others that may warrant some attention, and who may possibly be overlooked in Kevin McCarthy's quest for honesty and integrity in attempting to regain the trust of the American people.

Without using ad homs or whataboutisms, is there a reasonable rebuttal to McCarthy's letter and stated goals?

Sometimes I like to explore our resident lefties' view on politics to see if they will admit to the existence of any positive principles behind either party. Pure political nihilism is the most defensible viewpoint, when you accept that your nominal party preference has no demonstrable principles whatsoever. I think most of the conservative leaning folk on this board still do hold out some hope that principles in conservative politics do exist, to some degree.

I think both parties are roughly the same. I don't hold with all that bullshit about one party being morally superior to the other.

One party has one set of beliefs, one has a different set. They're both pretty scummy, as far as I can tell, however I'm sure there are also some very fine people in both parties, to coin a phrase.

Nobody ever says their own party is morally inferior to the other one, which is such an enormous coincidence.

I think most of the conservative leaning folk on this board still do hold out some hope that principles in conservative politics do exist, to some degree.

I imagine that the liberal leaning folk on this board hold out some hope regarding liberal politics.

And I hate to put words in your mouth, but doesn't the fact that you said this imply that you believe that it's only the conservatives that have this hope, and that all the liberals here are therefore essentially without principle?

I'm not saying you're without principle, I'm saying you don't claim the party you prefer has any principle. Not just you, any other lefty here doesn't go around saying good things about the Democrats either. It's all bad things about the Republicans. Meanwhile, the conservatives on the board seem more comfortable with the assumption that underneath the politics, there does remain some principle in the GOP.

There's more than one possible explanation for that discrepancy.

One of them is that all the real lefties have left the board. Maybe that's why they're called lefties. The remaining folk are kind of cynical centrists, or nihilists such as myself.

That's true. But I've scoured the planet for reasonable lefty voices, and the search has come up empty. Which might be expected, for the party of emotional truths. One shouldn't expect those truths to be defensible rationally.

To be fair, you haven't actually left the house whilst scouring the planet.

Would you consider Stephen Fry, for example, a lefty?
