It's OK. Real-time election debates already outlived their usefulness.
It's a multi media world. Explain and support your policy proposals with bullet points, charts, and graphs, animate them if you really have to, cite and link to your data sources. That's how thoughtful presentation of public policy ideas should be done these days.

The empty chair bit can be done by whoever wishes to hold a debate.

If you study history, most governments similar to ours do not last over 300 years. Walking away is one of the first steps to ultimate division and walking away is what is done, when one or more major factions think the game is rigged.
