Agreed, Mik. It's square peg round hole in our current culture and should be done away with.

It came from a time when there was really no other option for those who could not be trusted to reasonably live in a society. There were no prisons. Then we added religion to the mix, making it seem righteous.

The only value I think it has today is eliciting plea bargains to avoid it, and that is after the fact. No deterrent value there.
