@mark I've heard two weeks.
That's remarkably long. After 5-7 days you start to see the complications of having an endotracheal tube.
Most post-surgical patients need ventilation for about 3-5 days. The fact that these patients need ventilation for so much longer is one of the causes of the "crunch."
