Money can drive you nuts.

Had lunch with my SIL yesterday. We talked some about how bad things can sometimes be a blessing in diguise.
She's been recovering from a neck surgery before going back to nursing. It's fortunate that she had some time off. Her MIL's husband died, and my SIL and her husband have borne the brunt of logistical and financial decisions that have to be made.
First of all, MIL lived with her second husband in Missouri. A widow and widower who met later in life, they had a really good run of almost 20 years. But none of his children live around their home and the old lady has cancer (in remission). Both of her children live in Baton Rouge. So mom needs to move. At around 84.
So, SIL has found an oncologist and family practice guy for her, coordinated continuum of care, that kind if stuff. They've lined up movers, tried to wean out some furniture and stuff, and generally prepare for a move. As all of y'all are aware, it's a hassle.
But there is a confounding factor...While MIL's husband left the bulk of his estate to his children, he left his wife well-fixed, as we would say. In short, she now has more money than us peasants normally fool with...Not enough to burn a wet mule on a windy day, but enough to char him over good.
When you start throwing a few million here and a few million there, and you're trying to make sure Mom buys the right kind of new home, that her cash is distributed correctly, that some things are reinvested, that taxes are correct...One son of her late husband has been very good working with the team of attorneys and accountants in Missouri, but he's about to leave to return to his home in Vermont.
So, the scramble has been on to find a good local attorney well-versed in trusts (to double check the Missouri guys) and a good accounting firm in the Baton Rouge area. Not something folks at our level of income do much of. Luckily, my SIL's husband does know some monied people in state government and in the ag industry, so he's made some discrete inquiries. All the while, hoping to not make any mistakes.

You can always give it away.
Oh, I think over the years he's given some pretty decent sums. Hospitals and churches, mostly.

Let's see. Carry the two, divide by the square root of pi... I'm getting $4,523,631.67, give or take.

Do it in $1 bills, rather than in benjamins...
