It's worth finding the last speech he gave as president, it was entirely about immigration. It's hard to imagine it being well received by today's GOP.

Mik, how do you think President Reagan transplanted with his thoughts and policies to modern Republican Party would do? I kind of think that Ax is correct. He would have trouble in primary, but maybe do well in the general election if he made it there.

Maybe it would help if you or Ax let us know what Reagan would say or believe that modern Republicans would find disqualifying.

It’s actually sort of silly to think a politician, transported into a different cultural context, would continue to say the same things. Like there is an objective set of beliefs the person holds, independent of the culture they are trying to climb to the top of. That’s not how politicians work. There is at best a vague directionality to their core character. Everything else is finger to the wind stuff, playing to crowds. That’s the job, and the talented politicians will adapt.

I don’t often agree with Ax, and I certainly don’t here. Reagan’s message was not so different at its core. But he was also president at a time when communications and journalism was very, very different.
