Wyoming Electric Vehicle Road Trip Nightmare: Man Spends 15 Hours to Travel 178 Miles Across State

Alan O’Hashi is experienced at driving his electric vehicle around Wyoming. A former resident of the Cowboy State, he now lives in Colorado, but has taken many return road trips in his Nissan Leaf.

One thing he’s learned is that a road trip in an EV is much different than a traditional gasoline-fueled vehicle.

“It was very difficult, O’Hashi said. “For example, (it took) 15 hours to get from Cheyenne to Casper.”

That was his first trip. And this wasn’t back in the beginning days of EVs either. This was late May, 2022.

A month later, he was able to get the time down to speedy (relatively) 11 hours.

To put the trip in perspective, it’s 178 miles. Going the speed limit, it’s less than a 2 1/2 hour trip.

The federal government recently approved a plan that will provide money to build EV charging stations every 50 miles along major highways and interstates. As it is now, getting around the wide-open spaces of Wyoming in an EV is no day trip.

The saying, "Lite is just one damn thing after another," is a gross understatement. The damn things overlap.

Don't forget to build someplace to plug in the charging station.

There was a similar article written in 1922 about a guy wanting to do the same trip in a "new fangle" gas car.

"John Doe, even with pre-placing petrol canisters" along the way, still took many hours to travel home. In fact, while in Anytown, he had to have someone travel by horse and wagon to bring petrol to his car so he could continue his trip.

The federal government recently approved a plan that will provide money to build petrol stations. However, as Mr. Copper, a prominent local citizen pointed out, they still need a way to fill the petrol stations with petrol." 🙂

There’s a guy with a lot of time on his hands.

Seems like you could spend 5 minutes on Google and see where EV trips are still impractical.

He must have a really old Leaf that only slow charges. With today's Leaf he should be able to make that trip only stopping to charge once.
