I have grown to love football, and I think it's a love that will last. But I'd love it a lot more if I didn't have to flinch whenever somebody gets tackled hard or pig-piled or sacked.
Speaking of QBs, Brady is known for making jokes about his notoriously slow running speed. He said this about his scramble in the Packers game after that was negated by penalty, “I can turn a 40-yard gain into 18 yards better than anyone in the NFL.”

Injuries were the worst part of being a fan. The losses and heartbreaks from them were what you sign up for as a fan, but the random and relentless injuries were too much for my patience. I don’t miss following football or caring about a team.
random and relentless
Yes, just that -- random and relentless. You never know who will be hurt, but it's inevitable that somebody will, and the Injury Bogieman is no respecter of rank. When they're hurt, you hurt for them (though probably not as much as they hurt for themselves).
They are courageous, going out there every week in the season, knowing they might leave the field on the wagon, looking at weeks or months of impairment and pain.

Ben Roethlisberger, Tom Brady, Brett Favre, John Elway, Aaron Rodgers are the most sacked quarterbacks to have ever played the game. https://www.statmuse.com/nfl/ask?q=which+qb+has+been+sacked+the+most+times+all-time
All of them are modern era QBs that had/have very long careers. They are also all primarily pocket passers. Yes, Rodgers was a decent running QB, but he picked his spots and was always looking to throw first.
Mariota, Herbert, and Jones? More RPO action where the QB is also the RB2 statistically. Colleges have switched from pro-style offenses. This hurts the development of a lot of these kids and they wind up getting killed in the big leagues…
Still, I can’t remember a season where at least 6 starting QB’s weren’t knocked out of the lineup for significant amounts of time.

Are injuries more or less in rugby, where (I think) they don't use equipment at all.

Less.
Rugby players aren't as big or as fast as NFL players. Example: Terron Armstead, who used to be a Saint and now plays for the Dolphins, stands 6'5", weighs around 310 lbs and runs a 4.7 forty.

Less. But I am not sure the lack of pads has to do with that. I think injuries in football without pads would be disastrous. It’s not the pads and the abandon they encourage in the players, so much as the fact that football happens in distinct small chunks of highly choreographed action where players can get up to speed and momentum quickly and decisively to hit one another from opposite directions. That happens less in more free form games like Rugby.
