Article talks about the on-coming energy crisis stemming from the Russia-Ukraine war that will lead to all sorts of hardship for Europe. Jives with what @Doctor-Phibes keeps telling us about Europe getting it much worse than North America.

@Axtremus Not to worry, Ax. Liz Truss has just removed the cap on banker's bonuses, and removed the higher income tax rate, which is really really going to help low income folks who struggle to pay their heating bills this winter.
Somebody said it's like responding to a drowning man by telling him you'll buy shares in a rope company.

In the first world, we have life preservers. Ropes are better than nothing though and you shouldn’t feel bad about them. I’m imagining British life guards lassoing drowning people, pulling them out of the water by their ankles. I bet it works sometimes.

You're channeling Ax?

It is not an insult to be said to channel intelligent and good looking people of virtue.

@Doctor-Phibes , I have just come across an article talking about the UK’s new tax cut, the devaluing £, and the new government being worried about backlash that may result from rising mortgage rates:
https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/tories-fear-a-world-of-pain-if-housing-market-crashes-9x8shgvpd
In the UK, are most mortgages fixed rate or variable rate?
Politicians in the US are usually not as worried about rising mortgage rates because most mortgages here have fixed interest rates so rising mortgage rates will adversely impact just the new buyers for the most part. How does the UK compare in this regard? (Or Germany, for that matter, if @Klaus wants to chime in.) -

I think they're mostly variable rate - they certainly were when I lived there. I remember back in the early 90's before I bought a house they were up around 14%, and once they increased twice in one day.
