83-year-old woman shot while passing out pamphlets

ODESSA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — An 83-year-old woman was shot while passing out pamphlets at a home in Ionia County, Michigan State Police said.

On Tuesday afternoon, the woman got into what police called an “alleged verbal altercation” while she passed out pamphlets. She was shot in the shoulder.

The woman then drove herself to the Lake Odessa Police Department to report it and was taken to the hospital where she was treated and released.

Police did not say what kind of pamphlets she was distributing or where exactly in Ionia County she was shot.

MSP Lakeview Post is investigating the shooting. When it is complete, detectives will forward to the report to the Ionia County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office to decide if the county prosecutor will issue charges.

"Police did not say what kind of pamphlets."

    Oh...remember Jim Treacher's admonition.

    Prolife Volunteer Shot

On Tuesday, September 20, one of our local volunteers from Lake Odessa was shot while going door-to-door in her community to have conversations about Proposal 3.

The 84-year-old victim said that she was shot in the back/shoulder while leaving a residence during a heated conversation, and that the man who shot her was not a part of her conversation. The victim does not know the identity or motive of her shooter. The victim is still recovering from her gunshot wound and wishes to remain anonymous while the criminal investigation proceeds.

It's possible that her shooting had nothing to do with the canvassing.

    It's possible.

On average, 316 people are shot every day in the US, mostly due to the effects of violent computer games and people not going to church any more.

If she'd stayed at home playing violent computer games or had gone to church, this wouldn't have happened.

You think shooting octogenarians is funny?

I don't think shooting anybody is particularly funny.

I think that the fact that what should be a quickly-forgotten argument in the street so often turns into a shooting in this country is truly disgraceful and tragic.

I've tried saying that, and I get told that I'm a clueless foreigner who needs to mind his own business, so I'm trying humour.

I have to agree with @Doctor-Phibes

Politically motivated might be a bit strong. But it is really really sad that guns are many times the first response when someone gets in to a argument.

Roughly one (number pulled out of my ass) SUV incident per year as opposed to 316 gun incidents per day. Now, you can complain that the one incident with the SUV was under-reported due to media bias. How about the 316 per day? Can anybody name more than a couple?

So are we taking motivation into account with all of these numbers or are we just looking at raw numbers? Because if it’s just raw numbers, 1000 people needlessly die every day in car accidents…

If we’re talking motivation along with statistics, great. How do we rank motivation? I assume accidents aren’t going to count as there is no motivation. What about self defense? A lot of those shootings are self defense. Then there’s crime. How do we order robbery vs a crime of passion?

As I understand it, some motivations are more evil than others. Hatred especially is the most evil motivation. It’s better to have a strong distaste for one’s victims, rather than hatred, to minimize punishment.

                      Education is extremely important.

                                It was an accident.

The man who fired the shot that struck an anti-abortion rights canvasser in the shoulder last week called it an accident but also said the volunteer had been arguing with his wife, who supports abortion rights, and refused to leave their property.

“I came out and she (the volunteer) is screaming and having a great old time, and being told, I’m sure I heard at least a dozen times, ‘You’re trespassing, get off the property,'” 74-year-old Richard Harvey, wearing a “Facts Matter” baseball cap, told News 8 on Tuesday.

The shooting happened near Lake Odessa on Sept. 20. The 83-year-old victim volunteers for Right to Life, which says she was peaceful and was walking away when she was shot in the back.

                                Harvey disputes that.

Grandma deserved it. She was a "right wing nut."

Harvey has admitted to firing a warning shot at Jacobson before shooting the elderly woman but claims it was an accident. Jacobson and her attorney say that’s completely false and point out that Richard Harvey had already fired a warning shot and Jacobson had turned away to leave the couple’s property in her vehicle.

Now, in the new 911 call, Sharon Harvey tells the dispatcher that Jacobson :was in some coalition to stop the vote on Proposal 3.”

Richard then adds, “She’s a right wing nut” — making his motive to shoot Jacobson very clear.
