Strategically placed cop cars
-
At our Houston AirBnB, there are two cop cars parked at the entrance to the neighborhood. One of them is always there, but usually there are two:
Driving in for the first time, I thought it was a nice coincidence that cops happened to live nearby. But look at the neighborhood, and the placement of the cop cars:
A cozy, secluded, reasonably well off neighborhood just off one of the primary highway loops around Houston. I figure this area has had its share of burglaries. One of our neighbors has a security system that says "hello, you are being recorded", every time you walk past their house. The motion detection is so sensitive, the warning plays even if you're across the street.
It's nice that the cops are able to leave their cars at strategic locations like that. I hope it works.

Best behaved police force in Texas. If a cop even looks like being derelict, he's threatened with AirBnB duty. For a week.

I'm surprised that there's not a complaint about "disruptive noise" or something like that.
But, if it's, as you describe, a crime-riddled neighborhood, I get it.
You might want to take a look at your 2nd amendment protections, just in case. It's Texas, but still...
I am probably going to get a handgun. Or two. Then work every day to ensure they are not used against me.

You're a big guy. What fits you (in a handgun) probably won't fit the wife. But close may be good enough.
An AR with a collapsible stock will fit both of you. I suggest you do not get a pink one or even a Hello Kitty dustcover on a regular black one.
Add in a youth model 20gauge with a 21" or so barrel (it will fit her and you can accommodate it), and you'll be set to go.
There's probably a gun range somewhere around Houston. Maybe even two...

The trick to not needing to be one of those people is to live in a neighborhood where everybody is one of those people.

You should come to New England. We don't have any of that shit here.
Well, some people have as unconvincing dye-jobs as the guy, but the open shirt and chest-hair would definitely be frowned upon after Labor Day.
And the lady's stripes are very unbecoming.

He knows which end the pointy things come out of. He's handled one before and his finger is out of the trigger guard.
Her. I hope that thing's unloaded, because she's a moron.

They're both personal injury lawyers. I'm sure there's a joke in there somewhere if we work together to bring it out.

She's not much into makeup and hair care, either.

Good plan.
