Alan Alda is wearing a shirt many sizes too big.

My dad did that - shrank in old age and never updated his dress wardrobe. He’d go to a funeral and look like he was wearing a frock instead of a suit.

And this, in a nutshell, is why movie>show.

The movie (and book) was edgy, dark, and hilarious - "Is this man an enlisted man or an officer?" "Sixty-Nine is Divine!" "Author!"

That kind of stuff would have never been on the show which really tried to be all touchy-feely. And that's why I didn't like it. Taken without the history of the original material, it would have been OK, I suppose. But, I always watched it with the movie in mind.

And Sally Kellerman > Loretta Swit.

                      81bU3-SPndL.AC_SX425-666444506.jpeg

Don't get me started on Frank Burns. Duvall's portrayal of the deeply flawed, much hated (deservedly so) surgeon was fantastic. The show made him almost likable.

When my sister was in college, Larry Linville. the guy who played Frank Burns in the show came for some event. Apparently in the evening he was in the college bars trying to pick up the undergrads. They thought he was gross and he went home empty handed. He would have 50 or so at the time.

Maybe it worked 100 out of the 1000 times he tried it?

Possibly. And I’ll bet Alan Alda would have had greater success.
