Loved the last sentence: "But, I fear, we also have too little left of the gallantry that could produce such an extraordinary gesture, between two genuine representatives of a noble mindset, and solely as a private matter of their own."
You have to wonder how many such stories there are, how many accolades and/or special gifts Queen Elizabeth received, and the stories behind them. It would make a bodacious coffee table book -- no expense spared, of course!
