I think EVs are a pretty good idea as an evolutionary and probably temporary step. I think rushing headlong to them is a terrible idea.

Because in a gas-powered vehicle, you could just drive away?

At some point you could. Or at the worst, bring a two gallon can of gas back with you. Or gas up at the nearest gas stations.

What do you do with a dead EV?

Yes, at the moment the EV mandate is stupid for a lot of reasons.

But, by 2035 it will all be fixed and the only car you will be able to buy in VA is an EV.

1. Most gas powered vehicles can idle and drive the heater for over 30 hours on a full tank. Most EV’s are drained in under 6 hours in below 32 degrees.

2. Should it become necessary, I can walk some distance to retrieve gas from a station or siphon from other cars. You aren’t retrieving and carrying back a spare battery pack…

And you're actually going to ride it out for over 30 hours in your car?

Yes because when the road is snowed in with 6+ feet of accumulation, it's totally the gas that's the limiting factor.

Look, I get it, EVs have a more limited use case. But pointing to freak storm events that happen in this area once a decade, in which gas and EVs alike are both going to be stuck, is about the worst argument you could use not to buy an EV.

Believe it or not, I've had to evacuate for a hurricane before. There is absolutely no way we could've done it in an EV.

(Ironically, though, a bike would've saved time.)

The last time I evacuated for a hurricane was 1979. The causeways were only open in the direction of the mainland.

We managed to pull it off with unleaded gasoline.

Depends on how far you gotta go, I suppose. The roads were bumper to bumper for about 45 miles. Definitely bikeable, especially since speed wouldn't be an issue. After that, the roads were more cleared, and there were other ways to get out of town.

This coming from the guy that has bug-out bags ready to go? I’m not as bad as I used to be.. We don’t get many severe ice/snow events down here but I do toss the box with the 12 pack of water, emergency blanket, flashlight, hand warmers, box of granola bars, bag of rock salt, and a hand shovel into the trunk every winter…

You should always make sure you are prepared for a SHTF event even when you don’t expect one… You know that…

Now, a very good case could be made for having an electric assist bicycle…
