VDH on Trump's Fascism

Another long read...

"For the Left, Donald Trump is synonymous with “fascism” (or “semi-fascism,” as Joe Biden put it the other day). And for Liz Cheney and most of the NeverTrumpers, he remains an existential threat to democracy.
But to quantify those charges, what exactly has Trump done extralegally—as opposed to his bombast and braggadocio about what he might have wished to have done??

I was having a meal with a customer before the 2016 election, and he came out and said in all seriousness that Hillary was a Communist.
I'm afraid that I laughed. The guy said grace before the meal, too, which is a bit obnoxious at a business lunch that I'm paying for.

I thought we were talking about "The Left", rather than your clueless, geriatric President.
Plenty of people have referred to Obama, Hillary and Biden as 'Communists' or 'Marxists'.

Occasionally impolite or an incorrigible narcissist, Trump is a populist demagogue of our times. His demagoguery defies any understood ideological label. As it is he occupies a repugnant league of his own that has little in common with the very institutions that enabled him to hold the highest office for a brief four years.
Best case scenario is that he remains contained and out of public office for the remainder of his days.

I say Grace.
You call me on it, and you won't have to worry about the business meal. You can have your business.

I was of course too polite to say anything. I'm happy for you to say grace, however assuming that everybody else wants to join in, and really not giving us the option to do otherwise, is pretty rude. Particularly when I was the one taking him out for the meal. I work with some pretty devout RC's, and they thought it was flat-out weird.

As for Hillary...she's a socialist, not a communist.
Not really. I grew up in a country where they had proper socialists, who wanted to nationalise the utility companies and what not.
She's a social democrat, at least on paper.
What she really is is a self-serving speaker of bollocks. She's got a lot in common with the guy who beat her.

I don't think you have to preach over it, but Grace will be said. Roman Catholics may do what they deem appropriate. I think if Father Jones had said Grace before the meal, they wouldn't have batted an eyelash.
