The problem with many of these "foreign bodies" is that once they're up there, a couple of things can happen. The rectal sphincter tightens and spasms, and it just won't "let go."
The other thing is that a "suction" or "vacuum" effect occurs above the item preventing easy retrieval. If you can get a catheter passed up beyond the item, that breaks the suction and makes extraction easier.
OTOH, sometimes, you just gotta chew it up...
