The Four Gun Battery
-
Often discussed among the more rural...
Most people have at least one firearm, if you live on the rural route. Usually a .22, as it's cheap to own and shoot, plus a .22 rifle is very versatile. But many people have more than that and it usually comes down to a discussion of need.
For most people that might hunt a little or have to dispatch a varmint on occasion, it boils down to four firearms.....22 rifle, center-fire rifle, shotgun and handgun. Have opinions...
If possible, rimfire and center-fire rifles should have the same basic action. The rimfire paves the way for the centerfire. If you have a lever action deer rifle, you should have a lever action .22. If you have a semi-auto .22, you might consider a semi-auto deer rifle.
Shotgun? If you have only one, make it a pump. And if you can handle a 12 gauge, buy a 12...Unless it is for home defense only and then I like a 20.
Handgun? You want something small enough to conceal, if you have to, but large enough to easily handle and shoot. A three inch K-frame in .357 covers a lot of ground.
Those are the four basic weapons that cover almost everything. There have been forests if trees cut to make all the paper for the arguments for which gun is best, but those are the four categories which work.
