The other option was an 8 year old Ford Focus, but the dealer called us back with a “too good to be true” type of deal if we bought it today. Sorry, but that blows them right out of consideration.

It's most likely a 4.6 Northstar. Make damn sure it has no headgasket problems. If you buy it, make sure to keep the coolant topped off and at the first sign of overheating, SHUT IT DOWN.
Those engines are also bad about building up carbon, which contributes to some of those overheating and headgasket problems. Talk to your mechanic about what kind of panther piss he likes to help alleviate any residual carbon.
Otherwise, I bet it rides and drives pretty well. (My daughter's college car was a Buick Park Avenue with the 3800 V6).

Coolant levels were fine and tomorrow I am having my mechanic drain the oil to check for water/fluid. No engine knock, but we have driven enough to check for overheating.

He learned to drive with Karla’s Honda Pilot and my GMC SUV. Size isn’t a problem though I will have a backup camera installed.

One of my favorite beaters was a $350 71 Buick Electra coupe. The ride was the same at 55 or 110. Great car.
