    The mayor of Chicago pleads with Wal-Mart not to leave certain sections of the city.

    Why should they stay?

      The ironic thing is they battled the city for the better part of ten years to get in in the first place.

        But they won’t give up on Chicago, even if they abandon a location of two.

        They have nearly saturated the more rural parts of the country. The cities are their main, or even only, path to growth.

          @Jolly said in Why Stay?:

          Why should they stay?

          Because the likelihood that a particular store that was looted now will be looted again in future events isn't higher than for any other store, maybe?

          These riots are somewhat random in their destructiveness, I assume.

            Tell that to some of the businesses in Watts.

              I think Walmart being a target (see what I did there?) is non-random. They have TVs and other stuff.

              It’s more about how often you view such events occurring. Are these once in 50 years? Or will we have one every time a video is released of a black person killed by cops?

              It’s also possible that some of these stores were marginal for Walmart to begin with.

                Walmart has the stuff folks want, especially in lower SES. But it is difficult to listen to complaints of lack of opportunity or food deserts when businesses are periodically torched and looted..
