Wonder why the hospital never tried to contact anyone. Or maybe they did contact the husband and he basically ignored them?

Possibly.

I think the article a bit disingenuous on how easy it was to commit somebody back then, but it's a fact people were institutionalized for longer periods in mental hospitals. Without the drugs we have today, a lot of people didn't get turned around to where they could function in society.
