If the Wapo doesn't qualify as that, it's not because it's not mainstream, in this guy's eyes.

That the NYT is a center right paper.

That twit was from a series of twits that began with the NY Times Headline of "California Sends Democrats and the Nation Message on Crime" then the twit that sent the twits proceeds to talk about the NY Times being Center-Right. Jon might be referring to the Headline itself or the concept that the NY Times is Center-Right.
My guess is that the NY Times IS Center-Right when compared to the position of the twit and his twitmates.

The guy was reacting to this particular headline and has no insider information. Why would we lend credence to some wild extrapolation from an indoctrinated slippery sloper who probably sees the existentially dangerous creep of conservativism around every corner?

No one's lending credence. We're making fun of him.

Yeah. It's not big, but probably true, that the NYT is center-right to this professor's perspective. It would be big, and speculatively true, that that headline marks a sea change in the political perspective of the NYT. But I doubt that's true.

The headline is a reasonable take on the recalls, both of the SF school board members a few months back and Boudin just now.
Another good take is 'don't fuck with the Asian community'.

This is the article/headline the tweet reacts to, I suppose.

Interestingly, that headline, "Progressive Backlash in California Fuels Democratic Debate Over Crime", has been changed from the original, which was "Democrats send California and the Nation a Message on Crime". Maybe the progressive professor's whining was well received. I must admit, without his professor's very particular taste in headlines, I wouldn't have been able to tell which version was more constipated with disgusting right wing ideology.
