Academy Awards - Will Smith Edition

These two idiots were essentially at work when this happened.
Anybody who did that where I work would get fired, which is probably why it doesn't happen except very occasionally in my head.

Check your local police reports. Assault is kind of common.

I meant it doesn't typically happen where I work. Neither does insulting people's wives, for that matter. Obviously, it happens a lot in some places.

I don’t know, I kind of think the world would be a little bit better if people had to weigh the very real odds of getting their ass kicked for running their mouth too far.
There’s something to be said for settling differences out back. Within reason, of course.
An armed society is a polite society.

Anybody who thinks Smith was chivalrous or honorable for doing what he did needs to consider whether he would have done it to The Rock rather than Chris Rock.
Yeah, he smacked the skinny, loud mouthed kid who he knows full well can't fight back. Those of us who grew up as skinny, occasionally loud-mouthed kids know the scenario all too well.
Anybody who thinks this is the way things should be handled more generally must be imagining a world which is a level playing field for physical combat. But actually the real world is one where apparently the bigger or more highly trained martial artist gets to say whatever the fuck they want.
What're you talking about? They just get shot is all.
And it's not the way things should be handled, but it's the way they will be handled, by a whole lot of people. It wasn't a bitch move, it's what human beings do. It's amazing it doesn't happen more often and with weapons.
What humans do does not preclude bitch move status. First, Smith hoped Jada laughed it off. Then he saw she wasn’t and felt obligated to do something because he didn’t want to live the rest of his life with this not addressed in the moment. Then he sized Rock up, and he did what he did. Because he was too afraid not to, and he panicked. If Rock had been bigger, his calculation would have been different.

I don't. We have enough of that shit already.

Is it, though?
Who's more polite, Canadians, the Japanese or Americans?
-
Yes, it is. At least in terms of manners.

I’m not convinced the evidence backs this up. It’s a nice idea, but I can think of a number of heavily armed societies that would not be described as particularly polite or well mannered.

A few years ago my wife and I were waiting to be seated at a Cracker Barrel. If you've ever been in a Cracker Barrel you know there's a store full of various merchandise for sale that you just naturally wander around in while waiting for a table, and there's not much room to move around. Two guys came in through the front doors, both obviously just a little drunk. They were being loud and obnoxious, but weren't really botheringvanyone.... until one of them decided he liked my wife's looks, hung his arm around her shoulders, and grabbed one of her boobs. He made some sort of snide comment, but before he could finish his sentence I had knocked the crap out of him. I could have cared less about being accused of assault.

One of my engineers (a woman) was out shopping with her boyfriend a few years ago and two guys made comments about her. The boyfriend confronted them and they stabbed him. He died right there in the shopping mall. They went down for murder.
This stuff can get bad really quick.

Comedian hosts get to make jokes about Oscars attendees. Oscars attendees don’t get to assault them for it. This precedent set on a global stage by one of the most famous people in the world sucks, and the respectful reaction is stupid. Smith needs to be called a little bitch. Not respected.

That's why you never confront - you knock them into next week. If he wants to talk we can do that later, in his hospital room.

Jussie Smollett says Will Smith hit him too.

It’s very clear to most reasonable people that it wasn’t staged. You could see the emotion running through both of them after it happened. Both in Smith’s screaming about keeping his wife’s name out if Rock’s mouth, and in Rock as he stumbled over the rest of his lines. And in Smith’s later tearful acceptance speech.
