I don’t know, I kind of think the world would be a little bit better if people had to weigh the very real odds of getting their ass kicked for running their mouth too far.

There’s something to be said for settling differences out back. Within reason, of course.

Yeah, somebody says something rude, so then you slap them. Then they shoot you in "self defence".

I don't think confronting anybody physically is a good idea when so many people carry weapons.

They’re punting on purpose. Cops can charge misdemeanor assault whether the victim wants the, to or not

Quite the contrary, he reminded us all that he's still from West Philadelphia, born and raised.

I respect him for it. It was a cruel and tasteless joke that should never have been spoken.

I also respect the way Rock handled it. My hope is he did not know about her alopecia and will apologize.

It seems like what is considered OK at these things has moved over the last few years - a trend probably created by Ricky Gervais.

It might be an idea if people went in with the knowledge that they could be insulted. Not saying this trend is a good thing, but I don't think slapping people is a particularly great idea, either. They get paid the big bucks for a reason.

                        Ann Althouse on Smith's alopecia.

Finally, it's sad that the Smiths aren't proud of Jada's hair. She boldly shaves it down to almost nothing and that's a way of expressing great confidence in one's own beauty. I'm seeing some articles talking about her alopecia, but if you go to that link, you'll see she has a thin line of baldness across the top, and it's something that would be hidden if she didn't shave her head. She's highlighting the beauty of her face and the elegant structure of her head. She's not like those women in Chris Rock's movie who spend so much time at the hairdressers, use harsh chemicals, and cause so much importation of human hair from India.

                        The line of baldness:

Anybody who thinks Smith was chivalrous or honorable for doing what he did needs to consider whether he would have done it to The Rock rather than Chris Rock. Please. It was a bitch move.

Anybody who thinks this is the way things should be handled more generally must be imagining a world which is a level playing field for physical combat. But actually the real world is one where apparently the bigger or more highly trained martial artist gets to say whatever the fuck they want.

Anybody who did that where I work would get fired, which is probably why it doesn't happen except very occasionally in my head.

Anybody who did that where I work would get fired, which is probably why it doesn't happen except very occasionally in my head.

Check your local police reports. Assault is kind of common.

I meant it doesn't typically happen where I work. Neither does insulting people's wives, for that matter. Obviously, it happens a lot in some places.

                                      I was only joking

I don’t know, I kind of think the world would be a little bit better if people had to weigh the very real odds of getting their ass kicked for running their mouth too far.

There’s something to be said for settling differences out back. Within reason, of course.

Anybody who thinks Smith was chivalrous or honorable for doing what he did needs to consider whether he would have done it to The Rock rather than Chris Rock.

Yeah, he smacked the skinny, loud mouthed kid who he knows full well can't fight back. Those of us who grew up as skinny, occasionally loud-mouthed kids know the scenario all too well.

Anybody who thinks this is the way things should be handled more generally must be imagining a world which is a level playing field for physical combat. But actually the real world is one where apparently the bigger or more highly trained martial artist gets to say whatever the fuck they want.

What're you talking about? They just get shot is all.

And it's not the way things should be handled, but it's the way they will be handled, by a whole lot of people. It wasn't a bitch move, it's what human beings do. It's amazing it doesn't happen more often and with weapons.

What humans do does not preclude bitch move status. First, Smith hoped Jada laughed it off. Then he saw she wasn’t and felt obligated to do something because he didn’t want to live the rest of his life with this not addressed in the moment. Then he sized Rock up, and he did what he did. Because he was too afraid not to, and he panicked. If Rock had been bigger, his calculation would have been different.
