So, how the hell did this happen?

Background. I use GoDaddy for my email. I own my domain, and for years, I have used their platform with multiple email addresses without an issue. About 5 months ago, GoDaddy had us migrate to Outlook for their email. I got rid of all of the emails except two, mine (george@domain.com) and the wife's (mrsgeorge@domain.com).

Rather than logging into GoDaddy's webmail page, I'm now taken to Microsoft's page, and from there, to the web version of outlook. Mrs. George and I still use Apple's mail for daily usage.

About 4 days ago, Mrs. George got an email that looked like this:

The email was correct.
The password was correct.
The recipient was unknown (testrelay587@gmail.com).

A couple more emails like this came thru with different recipients: j.moore2013@aol.com, naoxide95@gmail.com.

Of course, I changed the password on her account. Mine has not been affected.

This afternoon, she tried to send an email, and got this message:

I got in touch with GoDaddy, and they asked why she was sending so many emails - obviously someone was using her email to send spam. She had only sent one or two mails this week.

So, how does this happen? She's opened no attachments, there's no virus or malware on her computer.

GoDaddy says they'll clear it up within 72 hours.

Well, I had to explain that this was NOT Mrs. George sending the emails and I reset the password.

See the field where "password" is listed - it was the correct (old) password.

GoDaddy called me and told me about the email changes a few months ago.

Of course I didn't want to change anything, I have hundreds of email addresses in use spread around a few of my domains. Cutting back to just a few addresses would have been a huge hassle, I've been making up email addresses for 14+ years.

So I just told them, I want it to work exactly the way it is now and I don't want to have to change anything and I'm willing to pay for that.

Problem solved. They charged me some outrageous fee (all their fees are outrageous) and I didn't have to do anything.

I'm not sure exactly what they did.

This pisses me off to the point that I'm seriously going to look at alternatives to GoDaddy. I don't need web hosting or any of that crap. I just want two or three emails.

I just checked my account, I don't see anything obvious.

The thing I wanted was that any email address in my domain would be forwarded to my default address.

So if I use tncr@mydomain.com it will come to me but I didn't do anything to setup that email address. So whenever I set up an account on the web (I have hundreds like most people) I use the name of the site like hertz@mydomain.com or amazon@mydomain.com. It just helps me sort things.

I looked around, but I don't see anywhere I can set this up, maybe the GoDaddy guy had to do it.
