Leviathan Falls lands on Tuesday, wrapping up the series…

@George-K Are you up to date on the novels?

I am not. I have to re-read 7, and then take a deep dive into the last 3.

Currently ¼ of the way through the latest "Revelation Space" book by Alastair Reynolds: "Inhibitor Phase."

I listen to the audiobooks on audible. I hadn’t realized the release of the new one was so close. I will try to re-listen to the last one before getting the conclusion.

@lufins-dad yep. Good plan. However, I really don't remember that much of book 7, other than the time jump, so it's a good place to get into it again. Put Marco Inaros into the rearview mirror.

              @lufins-dad what????

By the way, I plowed through number seven over the last few days, and just started number eight this afternoon.

              Oh my.

But a weird thing is happening since it’s been a while since I’ve read the Expanse. You know how you if you read a book series you have your own picture in your head of how the characters look that almost never match the show? I was always able to keep those images separate. I had 2 different Holdens.. My mental Holden and the show’s Holden… The same with Naomi, Amos, and Bobbi. The show absolutely nailed Alex and Avrisavala, IMO.

Anyway, this time my mental images are kind of screwy. Holden and Bobby are the same that I’ve always imagined them, but I keep picturing the show’s Naomi and can’t even remember what my mental Naomi looked like… and Amos? He keeps switching between the mental Amos and the show Amos. It’s very disconcerting…

@George-K @bachophile Memory’s Legion just landed… One last quick spin in the Expanse Universe…

The good news for me? They put all of the Novellas together as a collection. I had skipped all of the Novellas on Audible because I couldn’t bring myself to spend a credit for a 4 hour read. Now I’ll get Memory’s Legion, The Churn, Drive, The Butcher, Strange Dogs, et al…. for 1 credit.

Listening to it now. It’s better than the last couple novels, IMO. And it makes me think there’s no way they are done. They have finished the opening, and they will likely take a break, but there are literally thousands of blank canvases for them. So many new stories they can tell…

                              New Series -

How humanity came to the planet called Anjiin is lost in the fog of history, but that history is about to end.

The Carryx – part empire, part hive – have waged wars of conquest for centuries, destroying or enslaving species across the galaxy. Now, they are facing a great and deathless enemy. The key to their survival may rest with the humans of Anjiin.

Caught up in academic intrigue and affairs of the heart, Dafyd Alkhor is pleased just to be an assistant to a brilliant scientist and his celebrated research team. Then the Carryx ships descend, decimating the human population and taking the best and brightest of Anjiin society away to serve on the Carryx homeworld, and Dafyd is swept along with them.

They are dropped in the middle of a struggle they barely understand, set in a competition against the other captive species with extinction as the price of failure. Only Dafyd and a handful of his companions see past the Darwinian contest to the deeper game that they must play to survive: learning to understand – and manipulate – the Carryx themselves.

With a noble but suicidal human rebellion on one hand and strange and murderous enemies on the other, the team pays a terrible price to become the trusted servants of their new rulers.

Dafyd Alkhor is a simple man swept up in events that are beyond his control and more vast than his imagination. He will become the champion of humanity and its betrayer, the most hated man in history and the guardian of his people.

This is where his story begins..

The saying, "Lite is just one damn thing after another," is a gross understatement. The damn things overlap.

I ordered it on Audible, but didn't really start listening until this past week. It's quite good, and Jefferson Mays is doing a great job, but there's one issue that I've noticed and I find amusing. There's only so many voices these narrators can create. That's not normally an issue, since there's not as much crossover to other series as you might think. Listen to Jim Dale of the Harry Potter series narrate another chidren's book series, you'll recognize Hagrid or Dumbledore's voice, but it's not a big deal or confusing since the setting is so different, and the author's voice is so different.

In this case, he's narrating for the same authors, so the author's voice is similar, and it's appealing to the same audience as the earlier books. Finally, the setting itself... It really does feel like this is a "sequel" set 2-3 thousand years after The Expanse. So Mays is trying his damndest not to have the primary characters sound like Jim, Amos, Bobby, and Naomi. So a lot of the voices sound like the generic scientistists that were throughout the Expanse. I;m sure he'll find their voices soon, but it's just something that I find a little amusing.
