Having been POTUS, he knows how these things work, and how they don't work. Even if he didn't, this "suggestion" would be shot down by people who do know.

He was joking with his donors. It's in bad taste, especially considering the times, but it's basically a nothingburger.

Agreed, and it is good to always keep this in mind. Political affiliation doesn't say much about whether one is a good person. (With the obvious exception of Democrats, who are all bad.)
