The "Z"

I've seen several videos coming out of Ukraine, with vehicles that have a large "Z"spray-painted on their sides.
Apparently this is to distinguish Russian vehicles from Ukranian.
Pardon my stupid, but...what's to prevent the Ukrainians from going to their Ace Hardware and picking up a can of Krylon to protect their own armor?

Nothing and it’s not a stupid question to ask. But then again, it’s not a Hollywood movie those two armies are in either.
