    Nope, nope, nope.

If he's really interested in medicine, have him become a PA. You get to do a lot of medicine with far, far, fewer hassles.

    Good bank, too.

I have to discuss with him his reasoning for the interest in medical school. I’ve always thought he was more interested in research.

If he wants to go and has the grades, go.

Everything has it's own particular hardship to work through - which is sometimes more helpful to think through than the upside.

Medicine has a high initial debt load, high pressure to get sorted into specialties early and a very tiring life as a resident. (I'm sure the actual doctors here have a better view)

Research can be lonely. Years on the same project at a time when you're not that great at working towards ambiguous long-term goals.

First year at Northwestern is now $72K. Of course, that doesn't include room and board.

Just for reference, my tuition for the first year, inflation adjusted was $18,500 $12,600.

This might be why Eastern Virginia Medical School is popular around here.

Not cheap, but not UVA prices

Hey - at least it's med school and not a BA in underwater basket weaving. There's a path to pay this back.

How does your wife feel about the prospect of getting to say, in casual conversations, "my son is a doctor"?

Will having a doctor son make the brothers/sisters-in-law jealous? They have any doctor son or daughter?

                              Well, since:

                              B) in 12 years under our future Nationalized Medicine Program Doctors will be glorified DMV workers

We wonder if the ROI will be there.

                                We’re not Jewish

The first Jewish president calls up his mother and invites her over for Passover. Characteristically, his mother immediately begins complaining.

"Oiy, I'll need to book a flight and it's going to cost so much - it is just too much of a bother."

Her son counters, "Mom! I'm the President! I'll hire a private jet for you!

"Oiy, I'll need to catch a taxi and carry my luggage. It's just too much!"

"Mom! I'm the President! I'll pick you up in my limo! Then my guards will carry your luggage for you!"

"Oiy, I'll need to book a hotel."

"Mom! Don't be ridiculous! I'm the President! You can stay at the White House!"

"Okay, fine," she finally acquiesces. Two minutes later her friend Sophie, calls.

                                "So, Miriam, what's new?"

"Oiy, I'm going to my son for Pesach."

                                "Who, the doctor?"

                                "No, the other one."

Quite frankly (and no offense @George-K ) if he’s interested in the general field but also wants to make the cash, I would suggest Nurse Anesthesiologist. Six years total schooling and $180K per year…

What about looking for a PhD? Obviously most are research and while the pay while doing your PhD program is very poor, most schools will not accept PhD candidates unless they (the school) have funding to pay for them, so the schooling is "free".
