I agree. That is an interesting article. Most of the world still does look to America to lead when it comes to global foreign relations.

To my defense, I have "lived" (which i define as staying in a country for more than six months at one time) in 15+ countries and in a lot of those places, they were in "off the track" places (eg. Obrenovac, Serbia; Yogyakarta, Indonesia; Port Harcourt, Nigeria, etc) where it is possible to a pretty good feel for what that particular country thinks, as it is away from the "glitz and glamour" of the major cities. Interacted with both government, NGO's, private companies and individuals, from a launder lady in a village in India getting a micro loan to having a discussion with the CEO of a worldwide Fortune 100 company (PTT).
But it ultimately just comes down to my (semi) educated opinion.

I quickly read the article and thought it to be a well written and compelling analysis. There is one thing though I should like to add.
Putin rightly recognises that other than Russia itself, the US is the only sovereign continental power remaining in Europe. Should military conflict arise the USA is the single most powerful arbiter with which Russia must deal. As the author points out France and Britain’s respective diplomatic roles can only be seen within the broader context of US foreign policy and military capability. Putin engages directly with Washington because he knows that in the end it is only with US influence upon Ukraine can any agreement be reached that would allow for a diplomatic solution to this security crisis.
In this Putin is not unlike Stalin, who recognised that it was only with Roosevelt’s connivance in Tehran and later in Yalta, could he get what he wanted with Poland. What the London Poles and Churchill desired was of little concern to him or for that matter, Roosevelt. Indeed, the latter was primarily concerned with getting Stalin to attack the Japanese once Germany had been defeated in Europe. The fate of post war Poland concerned him not in the least.

And for all our posturing about sovereign nations, there's a lesson that applies to the Ukraine situation. Identify what the US's real interests are not just the words.
Although I must say promising that US troops would not be sent to Ukraine was about as idiotic a move on Biden's part as anything he has done in the past.

I don’t think it was so much idiotic as it was simply confirming to Putin what he already knew. On the other hand, it was by no means an astute diplomatic move or a credible means to continue any meaningful dialogue either. So yeah it must have seemed incredibly amateurish to the Kremlin.
In any case given today’s news from the Kremlin that it will recognize the breakaway Donbas regions as sovereign states, Kyiv and Washington are in a state of check for the next move. Any attempt on the part of Kyiv to reclaim the region will be met by overwhelming Russian military force; a repeat of Georgia in 2008, only this time I have no doubts the Russians would even consider withdrawal until Ukraine had capitulated and a Moscow friendly government is in charge.
No matter what happens, hang on to your energy stocks.

Link to videoExcellent interview and worth the time. Deeper understanding of not only what Putin wants but the events that have shaped his thinking. I thought from the beginning that we pushed Russia way too hard, essentially continuing the Cold War by choice. We largely created our own monster.
