Now I call them runners, but when I was a kid many called them “Hong Kong Getaways”. They were always ankle boots of black canvas with white piping and rubber soles. There was also a rubber stamp with Made in Hong Kong embossed on the outward ankle portion. Hence the slang term. The arrival of Adidas in stores in the late 1960s changed all that.

Urban blacks call them kicks. Or they did; maybe the term is out of fashion now.
