In a similar vein, there's lots of work being done on regeneration of nervous tissue. Long-thought to be impossible (once you cut a nerve, it's cut), there are signs that various types of neural injury can be reversed.
I've been following David Sinclair's work for about a year and a half, and one of his students was able to restore neural function in crushed frog optic nerve. By "function," I mean to say that the nerve started to show normal metabolic activity, beyond the "crush" site, not the the frogs were able to see again.
