Great story. Truly the greatest generation.
When I worked in an auto parts store during college one of my co-workers was Wendell Stokes, who had been captured in France and taken back to a POW camp in Germany for over a year. Despite being a gregarious guy, he wouldn't talk too much about it - just snippets here and there. I could tell it was bad, but he didn't focus on that, but on the stuff they pulled on the guards.
I miss that job and I especially miss Wendell.
