        No, most of the best guitarists are in Nashville.

          Awesome. Never seen that played on a steel string.

                Hard to pick just one. But of the sessions players, right now I like Melanie Faye and John Hiland. Faye is a young 20ish black girl who can just blister a guitar playing improvisational jazz and blues, Hiland is a big ole fat boy who plays country and rock. But if we're talking big names, I think Tommy Emmanuel or Vince Gill. I could listen to either one of them all day long. Heck, I enjoy just watching them play.

                The auto correct function on this place pisses me off....

                  @Larry,

                  Tommy Emmanuel is amazing. I went to two of his shows over the past couple of years. I will go again if the opportunity presents itself. Then there is Chet Atkins.

                  In the rock genre I go with Steve Howe, Steve Morse, Steve Hackett. The three Steves. lol Also, Alex Lifeson, & Robert Fripp

                  Al DiMeola, John Mclaughlin, Paco Delucia, Julian Bream, John Williams, Andreas Segovia, the list goes one.

                  There is no such thing as "the best". They are all amazing in their own right.

                      Johnny Hiland is an amazing player - I think I posted his stuff at the old place. He did quite a bit for PRS Guitars a few years ago, however I guess he jumped ship - maybe he doesn't appeal to their typical demographic.

                        In terms of big name players, Joe Bonamassa is amazing. I also really like John Mayer's playing when he's not busy being a pop star.

                            The best is somebody who can play just about anything, in almost any style he chooses.

                              I'm not sure I agree with that. I think there's something to be said for specialisation if you want to listen to the absolute best in a certain genre. I wouldn't want to listen to Stevie Ray Vaughn play classical music, and John Williams's forays into rock guitar leave quite a bit to be desired IMHO.

                                    Melanie Faye seems to be quite the natural. Excellent "noodling at home".

                                    I will listen to Bill Frisell a little later.
