M-16 vs. AR-15

I had a conversation Saturday with a long-serving sheriff's deputy and a state trooper. We were talking about all the M-16's that were transferred from the Army stores to law enforcement. Both were adamant that the full-auto function has no place in regular law enforcement.
That the AR-15, with the correct loads for decreased penetration was preferable. AR-15's are now standard issue for Louisiana State Troopers. The trooper also told me that shotguns were no longer issued to them. Troopers could carry and use a shotgun, but they had to provide their own, state-approved weapon.
