The Wheel of Time

@Aqua-Letifer @Doctor-Phibes Okay, just finished Knife of Dreams. I can only assume that Jordan received his diagnosis sometime in the middle of writing this book? There were like 10 long running storylines that were resolved very quickly and suddenly. In some cases, it felt like they were even abandoned just so he could get to the final story.

By the way, this series was definitely better as an audio book than on the written page. As I was cleaning out my office, I found that I had a copy of Wheel of Time that I had started years ago but abandoned due to all of the strange spellings. I always hated when fantasy authors just add a whole bunch of letters and apostrophes to make names and places sound more exotic...

Luke and I are planning on watching when he gets back next week. I have low expectations.

I watched the first couple, and thought it was OK. They seemed to make a number of rather unnecessary changes, and it’s really rushing along, but I think I will watch the rest. They’re going to have to cut quite a bit out, I think.

Reviews, for what it's worth, are mixed.
The reviews I’ve seen were clearly written by people who hadn’t read the books. Complaining about it being derivative of Tolkien is like complaining about there being sex scenes in Lady Chatterley.

As I said, I haven't read the books. The book/film debate is decades old, of course.
Look no further than the Dune franchise to see how well, and badly, it can be done.
Look no further than Foundation to see how almost unrelated to the book it can be.
I watched the first 15 minutes and it just didn't move me. I'll pass for now.

Read the books and loved them.
Hard pass on this B.S.

I think I'm intimidated by strong women.
Part of the point of the whole damn series is that sometimes strong women are okay, and sometimes they fuck things up, just like dudes. Handing over the societal keys to feminazis is a lateral move.
No chance this point, which was very much belabored in the books, is in any way referenced in the show.

I didn't get that from the first couple of episodes. The reds were pretty much portrayed as feminazis in the short clip featuring them. I was expecting it to be more PC than it appeared, at least in the first episode.
It's at least worth a look before writing it off completely.

Your post was very reminiscent of the books in that it suddenly stopped about 80% of the way through.
For some reason I can't see the spoiler.
-
@Doctor-Phibes Yeah, I can’t either. I recall something about the spoilers being down.
There were a few casting choices I didn’t care for, Lan and Tam primarily. While it felt odd at first for the Two Rivers to be populated by Indochinese , I was able to check my white privilege at the door and get past that. I don’t like where they have Perrin and Matrim at, though. I also didn’t feel the connection between these 3 Taveeren.

I just finished the second episode. It was as meh as I remembered the first one… Of course, the books improved over time, maybe the show does, too?

I think it takes itself way and I mean way too seriously.

The first episode. The script and acting were so humorless it was actually funny.

Can we now post spoilery stuff without worry?
