One of the interesting comments in that article is that Apple's new MacBook Pros weigh about a half a pound more than their previous incarnations. Yet, they're still only a millimeter or so thicker.
I think most users will not worry about the extra 8 ounces.
Now, gimme a good desktop, and I really DGAF how thick it is or how much it weighs.

Saw that a while ago, and I approve.
But...considering the tech "savvy-ness" of the average guy, what do you think the success rate of DIY repair of iPhones., Macs, etc will be? I'd guess pretty low. I'm no tech guy, and I've replaced memory, hard drives and batteries on laptops.
