OK, maybe not Mr. Paige, but I have heard that there were some Negroes in the Negro leagues.

Pardon my ignorance, but why is negro a bad term?

Because it comes from the word "nigger" or vice versa?

It’s actually the other way around. But the term negro, Spanish for black, fell out of favor several decades ago, likely because of the relationship between the terms.

Black people didn’t want to be associated with “dirty Mexicans”. It’s a regrettable piece of American history, best not revisited.

It's not bad exactly, it's more like suspect. Oftentimes blacks, especially young blacks, will refer to each other as "Negro" as a form of address, elongating the E sound: Neeeegro, like a form of mockery.

              Whoopsie....

              https://www.cnn.com/2016/05/22/politics/obama-federal-law-minorities-references/index.html

The federal government will no longer use the terms “Negro” and “Oriental” after President Barack Obama signed a bill into law.

The official terms will be African-American and Asian-American. Welcome to 2016.

In a rare show of bipartisan support, the measure H.R.4238, passed unanimously in the House of Representatives and the Senate earlier this year. Obama signed it into law Friday.

The measure updates the terms the U.S. federal government uses to describe minorities, including American Indian to Native American and “Spanish speaking individual of Spanish descent” to Hispanic.

Well, the question is as to whether he's in violation of federal law.

Does a president's speech qualify as an official federal document?

                  I dunno...

That's a bit severe. He was trying to heap praise upon African-Americans. It's not like he was being niggardly.

Sure, when Mr. Biden says something like this it just disappears into a black hole.
