Amtrak v Amazon
-
An Amtrak train collided with an Amazon delivery truck Wednesday afternoon in Ixonia in Jefferson County.
The crash happened a bit before 1:30 p.m. on River Valley Road.
Train 8/28 — of the Empire Builder line — was en route from Seattle/Portland to Milwaukee and Chicago.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said a preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle was heading northbound on River Valley Road when it tried to cross the tracks.
The Amtrak train heading eastbound stuck the vehicle while it was crossing the tracks.
There were no injuries to the 129 Amtrak passengers and 12 crew members, according to Amtrak.
Passengers said they felt a jolt when the train struck the truck.
An announcement on board the train said the Amazon driver was alive, WISN 12 News has learned. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said the driver was taken to an area hospital as a precaution.
The train plans to continue east to Chicago after the train and track are inspected.

I see that and wonder how it could happen. The picture down the tracks shows that it is wide open.
If it is anything like that going the other way, I wonder how the driver could to see/hear the train? Looking at his phone maybe?

Earlier this year and older couple who lived near a railroad track in a nearby community were crossing the tracks when eyewitnesses say he just stopped. Right on the crossing. They were older, in poor health, slow moving, but not suicidal. They said it seemed like the old man had just nodded off, and took his foot off the gas.
A train came barreling down the tracks, going way too fast, people said. They never found him.... his wife's body was strewn along about a quarter of a mile section of track.

Worked with a feller who tried to beat a KCS freight at the crossing. Said the train hit the bed of his old truck and knocked it spinning into the air. The collision threw him out of the cab, since he wasn't wearing his seatbelt.
That didn't hurt too bad, especially since he was still in the air and hadn't landed, yet. He said what hurt is when the spinning truck came around and knocked him up into a pine tree.
Luckily, he landed in a small tree and stuck. About 20 feet up. The fire department had their hands full getting him out of the tree without breaking anything else. Broken arm, messed up shoulder and back problems for the rest of his life. He said some of the bruises took almost a year to fully heal.
We just figured God wasn't through with him...

Bad link. Never mind.
