I've not seen any of these, but some of them look like really good bad movies!

Perfect Blue is awesome. Very creepy.
The VVitch is scary as shit, too, and a pretty good one.

I lay down the following challenge to any who dare, as this is how I saw it and it makes a huge difference: Watch "Audition" without reading up about it. Then report back.

• startle the hell out of you
• gross the hell out of you with gore

I care for neither.

Give me good suspense, but don't try to startle me or gross me out.

One exception to your rule I can think of is Wait Until Dark with Audrey Hepburn and Alan Arkin.
One word of warning that you ignore at the peril of being lost through the entire movie: Watch it from the very first frame.

You're watching the wrong ones. But yes, most are like that. Just not all.

Actually, Wait Until Dark is probably more suspense than horror, but with a smidgeon of horror.

I love, LOVE, that movie. But, it falls under suspense in my book.

When I was a kid, I begged my father to take me to see "House on Haunted Hill," which starred Vincent Price. Looking at it now, it was cheesy AF, but it gave me nightmares for months (especially the head in the suitcase scene).

Don't scare me. Confuse me, and make me wonder what's going to happen next. Aside from @Aqua-s-Sister , I don't go for cheap thrills.

I've always disliked horror movies, at least the less subtle ones. "The Shining" or "The Silence of the Lambs" would be exceptions.

I wouldn't consider "Silence of the Lambs" to be even close to a "horror movie." It's a suspense thriller.

"Shining" comes close, but again, it's more of a psychological thriller with supernatural overtones.

Perhaps my idea of "horror movie" is too narrow.

@george-k my appreciation for horror movies was destroyed forever when I was 10 or something and a well-meaning adolescent relative let me watch a VHS tape with "The Evil Dead".

Perhaps my idea of "horror movie" is too narrow.

One of the most "horrible" movies I ever saw is one I've brought up to many people in my life, and no one seems to have heard of it: "What's the Matter With Helen?" It's horror, but not in the common vein. That's the only movie that ever seriously disturbed my sleep. Especially effective were the little unobtrusive director's touches; just chilling.

ETA: I was pretty young when I saw it. Possibly it wouldn't be that big a deal for me (or you) today.
